COLIN VS HOLLYWOOD... AGAIN

I’ve noticed during some of the interviews Colin’s been doing lately, that he appears to be under the impression that he’s no longer of any interest to the media, and indeed he appears to have clearly welcomed this new found ‘non-crazed’ anonymity.  Along with the apparent much sought after normality he is now able to actively live his life.  So I’m a little confused as to why he is suddenly considering to do another Hollywood blockbuster movie such as “Total Recall”?

Since steering away from the big budget films, he has involved himself in more independent films such as “In Bruges”, “Triage“, and “Ondine” etc, which has definitely defined him amongst his peers as being classed as a talented actor of  ‘substance’.

I wonder if the film “London Boulevard” was intended as a launching pad as in terms of seeing how the public would respond to him in a more main-stream type movie again?  And so far, the public are indeed liking Colin Farrell, the actor whom they'd almost forgotten about.  And so now the temptation of Hollywood has come calling, and the prospect of an even bigger movie has been offered.

But why would he really want to go through all that Hollywood hype again.  Surely, such a move will rob him of the sacred privacy he has since established for himself?

Does he really feel making Hollywood blockbuster films is the way to success?  Does he really need to involve himelf again, in order to feel worthy as an actor?

Or, is it a case of simple vanity?  I am not saying this is a bad thing, after all, we all like to be flattered.  But I am baffled as to why someone who has worked so hard both professionally, and personally to find a level of balance in their life would now consider putting themselves right back into a pressurised arena of a multi-million dollar industry whose only real interest is in ticket sales: and when those tickets don’t sell... it can lead to some very dire consequences.

Maybe, Colin Farrell has decided he is older, and wiser, and sober, and has the scars and greying hair to prove it.  So perhaps, he generally feels this is the right time in his life to face such a challenge?  Could it be possible he is deliberately testing himself?  Or, is it an actor thing: I must have an Oscar to prove to myself and to the world: YES, I AM THE BEST! ; - ) LOL

PS. Would be very interested in your comments on this as CF fans x

  1. I must admit I'm a little perplexed regarding some of his recent choices - perhaps he just wants to "mix it up" a bit and do a few large mainstream movies. I personally love when he does smaller independent films like In Bruges & Ondine - he gets to show what incredible range he has as an actor. I am looking forward to At Swim two Birds and Cosmopolis - but I just don't get the remakes -Fright Night & Total Recall. Maybe he just needs the $$$$ ???

  2. Why must he do indies to prove that he's a committed actor? Maybe he wants to do remakes just 'cause he liked the original and would love to do another version. I seriously doubt the guy is hurting for money.

  3. I agree, perhaps he just wants to "mix it up" a bit. As an actor he would naturally want to try out varied roles. And no I don't think he just has to do 'indie' movies to prove he's a committed actor. But the choices he considering are major film roles, as well as being high ranking risk factor films.

Maybe, he's thinking a lot of the younger generation don't really know who is he? And so this is his way of getting his name known again amongst the younger film goers?

The only problem could be, he would then become known by name only again, as in Colin Farrell the Hollywood Movie Star,as opposed to Colin Farrell, the actor.

It may also prove more difficult for him to be considered for independent films in the future. As in would the independent film makers movie budget stretch to being able to afford a Hollywood Movie Star's fee. And indeed would having such a 'big name' associated with the film run the risk of possibly taking over perhpas the very essence of what the smaller movie offers?

  4. Well, maybe this is the answer. A quote from Colin:

"I'd like to make big films and small films, mainly because I'm a massive fan of film. The idea of doing an Indiana Jones, or even an Inception - I love the grandiosity, how sweepingly entertaining films can be. And I think there's a place for films that pry more into the human condition."

I stole it from IMDB. Probably not going to be there much longer so I'm very happy CFWB is active again.

  5. Thanks Iz ;;) It's certainly a worthy quote; and yes, I agree with what he is saying. But the reality can be very different as surely Colin, would know only too well!

It can sometimes come down to the simple fact: You can't have your cake & eat it. Or, maybe when you reach a certain stage in your acting career you can... who knows?

I just hope that if he does venture back into main-stream films again, that he doesn't end up getting type-cast into doing 'just' Hollywood movies. As in discovering he's become too big a star to be considered for the smaller budget films... again.

The intention might be there but sometimes no matter how much such the wish - it is not an easy path to be part of both worlds... as many actor's have found out to their personal cost!

It is by no means easy to differeniate in a public sense, between Hollywood and Independent films :) However, if Colin Farrell is willing to go for it then I'm absoluetly rooting for him all the way because I believe he really can do it. And whatever the cost well... I'm sure he has considered all the options x
